Gen-Z has grown up with the ability to share content with its local and global community and now, the gap between online and offline is smaller than ever before. It comes as no surprise that for this generation identity and technology are intertwined. Social media enables a new form of self-expression that empowers them to show their authenticity and creativity. The old gatekeepers of culture no longer have the last say; Gen Z’ers crave and demand change where they actively seek to uplift voices and viewpoints that match their own. They are critical thinkers, activists, 24/7 occupied with media narratives and extremely resourceful. This generation is all about community and creating a safe environment for all.

So, what inspires them? What medium do they use for self-expression? And how does social media affect them, in good and bad ways? We asked multiple Gen-Z youths how they express their critical thinking, ambition and heritage through their online/offline identities and self-expression.

“Through the variety of cultural expressions we have at our fingertips, social media to me is a gateway to culture, trends, inspiration and information. I use it to get an overview of what is emerging on a daily basis aswell as to deepen my knowledge on the things I am passionate about.”
