CURRENCY OF CARE

The Social and Economic Realities of Overseas Filipino Workers

MSc Social and Cultural Anthropology

For my thesis, I did three months of fieldwork in the Philippines, where I studied the social and economic realities of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

As migration has become a political buzzword and wealthier nations continue to demand “cheap” foreign labour, my research focuses on how this affects the workers behind it. From the sacrifices made abroad to the challenge of reintegrating into the lives they once had to leave behind, my thesis explores that behind every remittance lies a deeper meaning that extends far beyond the financial. It is emotional, relational, and deeply human. To me, this is the essence of the OFW migration story: not just a flow of money, but a reality where care becomes the most valuable currency of all.
